Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) Therapy
Understanding a nervous system built to protect its autonomy.
A lot of years go into learning how to fit in, into explaining yourself well enough that no one asks too many questions. Except it costs you something every time, and after years of that, there is nothing left.
What gets labelled as difficulty, resistance, or laziness is your nervous system protecting itself. That is not a flaw. That is a survival response for a world not built for how your brain works.
Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) therapy at Driftwood Psychotherapy is for adults navigating a PDA profile, in person in Barrie and virtually across Ontario.
Some of this might feel familiar:
Feeling pulled toward something, then feeling incapable once it becomes an expectation
Using humour, distraction, or negotiation to buy time when the pressure builds
Cycling through pushing hard, then shutdown, exhaustion, or burnout
Masking so thoroughly that most people have no idea what it costs you
When Demands Feel Impossible
A request to do something, even something you genuinely want, can arrive with a weight that is hard to explain. It is not stubbornness. It is not defiance. Your nervous system reads it as a threat and responds before you even have a chance to think about it.
PDA therapy can help when you are dealing with:
Burnout from years of masking, overfunctioning, or forcing compliance
Identity questions that came with a late diagnosis or self-identification
Shame around things that feel like they should be simple
Relationships strained by what your nervous system actually needs
Years of working hard to belong somewhere that was never built for this do not go unnoticed. It shows up in your body, in ways you didn't want or expect.
PDA Is Not About Defiance
The response is not defiance. It is anxiety. Your nervous system is doing what it was built to do: protect you. Some people describe PDA as a persistent drive for autonomy, which gets closer to what's actually happening: not refusing to do things, but a nervous system that can't negotiate its way through compliance.
We are not here to make you more compliant. We are not experts handing down answers from above. We are guides. We get curious together about what is actually driving your response, not just what it looks like from the outside.
Lived Experience Behind the Work
The team at Driftwood brings more than clinical training to this work. Joshua was diagnosed with autism and ADHD in adulthood, and is a parent to a child who is neuroaffirming in how he processes the world. That shapes how he shows up with clients.
He understands what it costs to spend years trying to fit somewhere that was not built for you.
What Can Start to Change
Belonging does not come from fitting in. It comes from understanding how your brain actually works, finding the words for it, and finding people who get it.
Over time, this work can help create more space for:
A life that requires less masking and costs you less to live
Knowing what you actually need and being able to say it
Relationships where no performance is required
Recognizing the pattern when it starts, rather than being caught in it afterward
The goal is not to become someone without a PDA profile. It is to stop fighting how you actually work and start building from there.

Questions About PDA Therapy
-
No. Many adults come in self-identified or are still in the process of figuring out what fits. A diagnosis is not required to start. We begin with what is actually happening, not with paperwork.
-
The PDA profile has specific features that standard autism approaches do not always account for, and some common approaches can actually make things harder rather than easier. At Driftwood, the work is low-pressure and collaborative, and it follows what the nervous system can actually engage with. We are not here to reduce avoidance by adding demand. We are here to understand what is underneath it.
-
A lot of therapy relies on approaches that assume the nervous system responds to pressure the way most people's do. If that hasn't worked for you, that makes complete sense. The work here starts from what is actually happening for you, not from a protocol built for a different nervous system.
-
Yes. Driftwood Psychotherapy offers virtual therapy across Ontario, with in-person sessions available in Barrie. Many adults with a PDA profile find virtual therapy easier to access and engage with.
-
The PDA profile describes a pattern in which everyday demands, including internal ones like hunger or tiredness, are perceived as threats by the nervous system. What looks like avoidance or resistance is usually an anxiety response. PDA is often part of an autistic experience, though it is not yet a standalone diagnosis in Canadian clinical manuals.

The structure here is flexible by design. Sessions are a conversation, not a curriculum. There is no right way to show up, and nothing to get correct. We start where things are.
-
Individual therapy is $175 per session, HST included. A free 15-minute consultation is available. Many extended health benefit plans cover Registered Psychotherapist sessions. Clients submit for reimbursement directly.
